A grasp of the past and present could help your realize your hopes in the future.
Getting a hold on the present doesn't mean neglecting the past. After all, the past is the root of the present. When you're caught unawares, that's when a look back could help you find your personal potential and help you regain your sense of direction.
The future is where the hopes of the present are. We can have two outlooks on the future. One is to think of the present as a stepping stone, and so you channel your present energies towards accomplishing your future hopes. The other is , very simply, to live for the present. Actually, these two outlooks can be complementary. If you make the most of the present and do your best to make every day better, than you may have a promising future.
The Chinese proverb reminds you: A grasp of the past and present could help your realize your hopes in the future.

Guard against your own selfishness before you guard against the selfishness of others.
In your thoughts and behavior, the element most likely to damage your personality and your image is selfishness. In reality, people who think only of themselves and their advantage are not happy.
Selfish people spend hours deliberating how to gain benefits and advantages. Worrying about worldly gains and losses can create a great deal of nervous stress. If people can find inner peace, they will find happiness. But if people, out of selfishness, think they're smart seeking happiness in outwitting and outmanoeuvering others for an advantage, they'll find a lot of unhappiness.

Criticism, sacrifice, and discipline may not be enjoyable, but success is.

Many people can't take criticism, but being able to accept criticism is a prerequisite to success. If no one were to criticize you, you'd probably be common and ignorant. But if you were able to accept "constructive" criticism, you'd be taking a step on the road of success.
The pleasure of sacrifice is also an ingredient of success. If you were able make the most of your time while other people wasted theirs, you'd take another step towards success. Another ingredient of success is discipline. In the west they say "No pain, no gain.". If you were to realize that you could have difficulties along the way, you'd be even closer to the likelihood of success.
